Book Review: Caps for Sale
By Esphyr Slobodkina
“Caps for Sale” is a delightful and humorous tale about a street trader selling colourful hats as he walks through the streets in a small country town. He carefully balances a large stack of hats on top of his head, on top of his own checked cap, of course. He must move carefully and keep his back very straight or he might disturb his caps. He stops to take a nap under a tree and wakes up to discover his caps are gone, and soon begins his encounter with a band of silly monkeys!
This story uses rhythmic and repetitive language and young children might soon enjoy repeating some phrases alongside you. The unexpected twists keep both children and adults entertained and you’re sure to have many requests for this book. This wonderful children’s folk tale is a classic that has been in print since 1940.
